Björn Simon Hudin

About

Welcome

My name is Simon Hudin and this is my sailing portal. Here I have the opportunity to tell you a bit about myself, my passion for sailing and advertise my availability to partake in the next big sailing adventure. I'm always interested to hear about upcoming sailing opportunities so feel free to contact me and we'll have a chat.

The Sailing Bear

Bjǫrn is an old norse spelling for bear which has carried through to the modern scandinavian languages in the forms of Bjørn (Denmark & Norway) and Björn (Sweden & Iceland). I carry the middle name Björn (albeit first in order), from my father. Thus my name is Bear Simon in English. And so, it is a fact. I am The Sailing Bear.

Sailor

As a sailor I'm very easy going and low maintenance. Never been sea sick. Enjoy cooking at 20° heeling and don't mind grueling rotations, sailing short handed or in adverse condition. All whilst respecting and adhering to safety, on top and below decks.

I have a can-do attitude, I am mechanically and technically inclined, enjoying all tasks and challenges of sailing. And I can contribute to all aspects of running the yacht, navigating and passage planning. Having crewed on over 10 yachts, with a multitude of crews from all walks of life, of various origins and faiths, I’m confident that I can fit in almost any constellation of people. I also enjoy retreating to my quarters and passing time in solitude when needed.

More About Me

While it says Swedish in my passport, having been an expat for over a decade I consider myself more of a resident of planet Earth. I'm in my early fourties and married to a very understanding wife, who thankfully accepts, or endure(?), my shenanigans and adventurous spirit. Our little family also includes our beloved cat named Ramsay (Remsan, Grisen, Fluff).

Curious by nature, always interested to learn and understand about whatever tickles my fancy. Early on learning how computers and networks work, how to code and basic graphic design. Allowing me as self taught, to work in support, moving on to developing systems and web applications. And finally, for 7 years act as the chief technical officer for a company I co-founded, offering operational outsourcing to online businesses. The same enthusiasm to learn, got me to play the guitar, cook the perfect steak and most importantly, engage in the wonderful activity of sailing.

Having recently found my passion for sailing, a skill and vocation I understand that you never will fully master. With every passage being unique in it's own way. Be that weather, sea, boat, crew, mechanical or just bad luck. I feel as if I have found a purpose that resonates with me and who I am. It just so happens that it also lends itself well to my newly found interest in reading and strange fascination with variant Sudoku.

Quick Questions

Favorite food?

Easy! The Thai dish Pad Kra Pao. Stir fry with thai holy basil and a protein of your choice. Could eat this all day, every day.

Favorite sailing gadget?

Hands down my Garmin InReach Mini 2. Tracking my milage, enabling communication with my family while offshore and the PLB feature. Fingers crossed I won't ever need to use the latter.

Favorite movie?

Although not the best movie I've ever seen. It's the one movie that I return to whenever this question comes up. Heat from 1995 with brilliant acting from some true heavy hitters. Could rewatch it right now.

Favorite book?

I understand this is so cliche in the sailing community, but The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway is probably the one. For now.

Dream sailing adventure?

For me, the destination is less enticing than the planning, preparations and journey itself. Thus sailing across the atlantic and the pacific, and to circumnavigate would be my picks.

Current goals?

I'm working towards the RYA Yachtmaster Ocean ticket and commercial endorsement. And I would also like to attain the Swedish equivalent to Yachtmaster Offshore. And to further my knowledge, experience and skill sets on yachts in all capacities.
